The Toy Train to Shimla
Six hours on the world's slowest train. Two people who had been pretending for too long.
Aditi and Sameer had been 'just friends' for so long that their friend group had stopped betting on them. The moment had passed, everyone agreed. They were simply those two people — the ones who finished each other's sentences and called at midnight and remembered each other's coffee orders and somehow never, in four years, said the thing.
Then the group trip fell apart. Cancellations, excuses, a wedding conflict. It was just the two of them left with non-refundable tickets on the Kalka-Shimla heritage railway.
The toy train climbed. Pine trees gave way to oak, then rhododendron, then mist. Aditi watched the valleys fall away below and felt something she hadn't felt in a long time: nowhere to be.

At Barog tunnel — the longest tunnel on the route, ninety seconds of absolute dark — Sameer said it.
Just like that. Into the darkness, where he didn't have to watch her face.
"I think I've been in love with you since the night we got stranded in Kasol and shared that one sleeping bag and you told me about your father."
The train came out the other side. Sunlight flooded back in.
Aditi stared at the mountains.
Then: "That was three years ago, Sameer."
"I know."
"You let me date two other people."
"I know. I was stupid. And a coward."
The train rocked gently around a curve. A waterfall appeared and disappeared.
Aditi turned to face him for the first time.
"You're lucky," she said, "that this train goes very slowly."
