She was standing near the marigold archway, adjusting her dupatta, distracted by the chaos of her cousin's wedding. Her eyes, lined in kohl, swept across the room and landed on his.
One second. Two seconds. Five.
She looked away first. He stood there, completely rearranged.
His friend Vikram appeared at his elbow. "That's Ananya. She's from Jaipur. Computer science. Reads Urdu poetry. Don't even try — she's way out of your league."
Arjun smiled. For the first time in his life, he didn't consult the spreadsheet.
He walked across the hall, through the noise and the jasmine and the dhol beats, and stood before her.
"I think I've been looking for you in every room I've ever entered," he said.
She stared at him. Then, slowly, the corner of her mouth curved upward.
"That's either the most beautiful thing or the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard."
"Both," he admitted.
She laughed. And in that sound, five years of spreadsheets dissolved.
